AC0 Monsters – Desert Ooze

Have you ever played with kinetic sand? That is some weird stuff. Now, imagine if it were alive… and hungry. Like most oozes and slimes it just wants to eat, but what if it could spin it self like a tornado and, with all of that rotating sand, it has become a sand blaster, absorbing it’s food at the same time. Or just sliding up to you as another shifting dune and munching on you while you sleep in the cool desert night. Either way, visit the desert and it’s a hazard.

This creature is a variety of gray ooze which has adapted to living in the desert. It is 95% invisible when lying in the desert sand. It looks like a pile of tan colored, granular pile of sand. The sand-colored filament pseudopods holding it all together cannot be seen as it actually absorbs desert sand into itself as part of its cover.

Combat: Desert Ooze strikes like a snake, then attempts to flow over a victim and then rotate at an unbelievable high rate of speed. As it spins, the sand within its body works like a sand blaster stripping the organic matter from its intended victim. The organic matter is consumed as the Desert Ooze rotates, until nothing is left.

The Desert Ooze is also smart enough to hide what it cannot consume of inorganic materials as it might giveaway its position to other prey.

Desert Ooze cannot be harmed by acid, but cold can do half damage and fire, electricity and magic missiles inflict full damage. Blows from blunt weapons inflict only 2 point of damage per hit.

Habitat/Society: Desert Oozes live primarily in the Raurin Desert, though they have been found in the Calim Desert and the Shaar Desolation. They reproduce by budding, like the gray ooze, but the Desert pods usually take one month to hatch. Desert Oozes never reproduce more than twice. They have learned to hunt in groups if necessary.

Ecology: Desert Oozes are smart scavengers that hide their undigestables so incidental treasure can often be found around and in their lairs.
