The Scant is a ghostly creature that appears as a faint, wispy light that hovers silently through the air. Despite its weak appearance, the Scant has the ability to drain the life force of living creatures, slowly weakening them until they are unable to resist its grasp.

The Scant can appear as a much more formidable foe, with the ability to manifest a physical form and wield powerful magic. Its wispy nature allows it to move quickly and evade attacks, making it difficult to defeat. However, the Scant’s true weakness is its reliance on the life force of others. Without this sustenance, it quickly becomes weak and fades away. Skilled adventurers can use this knowledge to turn the creature’s abilities against it, luring it into traps or driving it away with powerful spells.

Languages: Can understand Common and any languages it knew in life, but cannot speak or communicate directly.

Draining Aura: Any creature that ends its turn within 10 feet of the Scant must make a Constitution saving throw or take 7 (1d6) necrotic damage. On a failed save, the Scant regains hit points equal to the damage dealt.

Actions:

Life Drain: Melee Spell Attack: +5 to hit, one creature. Hit: 9 (1d8) necrotic damage, and the target must make a Constitution saving throw or have its hit point maximum reduced by an amount equal to the necrotic damage taken. The target dies if this effect reduces its hit point maximum to 0. The reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest.

Incorporeal Form: The Scant becomes insubstantial, allowing it to move through solid objects and evade nonmagical attacks until the end of its next turn.

Magic Missiles: The Scant fires three magical darts that each deal 1d4+1 force damage to different targets within 120 ft.

Reactions:

Ethereal Jaunt: When the Scant takes damage, it can use its reaction to shift partially into the Ethereal Plane until the end of its next turn, making it harder to hit.
