Campaign Dice – Dice Tower

Dice towers… Do you have one? Do you need one? Should I get that thing growing on my armpit checked? All valid questions. So, let me try and give you my unbiased opinion on at least one dice tower that I picked up while roving the game aisle at Wal Mart.

This is the Spinmaster Campaign Dice dice tower. So, why did I choose to purchase this thing. Well, I haven’t used a dice tower in a while. I actually don’t even own one. So, for $14.88 I thought I would give it a whirl.

Upon opening the box, I noticed it was two pieces. Three if you can’t the small plastic bag of 7 polyhedral dice: 1d4, 1d6, 1d8, 2d10, 1d12, and 1d20. The two other pieces fit snugly together. One is a dice tray, the other is the tower. Once assembled and dice poured into the top, the tower does a more than adequate job of “rolling” the dice as it has three levels for them to tumble against.

One thing I found great was how it handled the d4. D4 is one of, in my opinion, the most problematic die to roll. It never wants to roll properly. It wants to find a flat spot and slide. Even the spin technique can be a pain. That can often send your die bouncing around the table or off into oblivion if it hits another object. The tower made sure it actually rolled.

The tower also folded up and was easy for transport. You can put your dice inside in you want, but it will sound like you’ve got a maraca. The tower and dice tray are made of a sturdy plastic and should hold up for quite a while. The plastic is also molded with cobblestone for effect, and it helps with the dice rolling.

But… The color decorations are done with printed cardboard and glued on. In certain areas of the tower the cardboard extends beyond the tower (the tray mouth, the back bottom). This can give it a cheap feel or be ripped if someone is not careful. Also, if you play a lot, those cardboard graphics are going to be scratched and worn very soon.

All in all, it’s a good dice tower. It does its job and doesn’t try to be one of those fancy dice towers that look like a dragon shooting dice out of his… Well, you know what I mean. Would I recommend it? Sure, for a novice or occasional gamer, you bet. For a pro who likes their stuff a little more pristine you might want to search a bit more. There might be a purple worm that shoots dice out of its mouth out there.
